Early Spring in the Tuscan Emilian Apennines

When people think to Italian mountains they think to Dolomites … and they really don’t know how many wonderful places there are in the Apennines !
To me the mountains between Tuscany and Emilia are like home, I spent there  many seasons with my family and I can say that these places are enchanting.

Last  Easter Monday , a nice sunny day,  we decided to do an outdoor excursion there . First we reached “La Santona” , a group of houses  just one hour from Modena . The road for getting there is like a snake through hills and mountains with magnificent views .

We really enjoyed lunch in a little family restaurant called Miramonti . The restaurant has won many awards from the seventies to nowadays . Mom and son , the owners of the restaurant are very nice people . The mother is the cook and she does delicious homemade pasta!
The best one : “Tortelloni di ricotta burro e salvia” homemade pasta filled with ricotta cheese and spinach and then cooked and seasoned with butter and sage…creamy and tasty!

“Tortellini alla panna” ,  traditional homemade pasta filled with meat, boiled  in a meat soup and mixed with fresh cream. Wonderfully milky and flavorful.

Tagliatelle al ragù, homemade pasta , a little thick that soak the sauce and meat …delightful!

The vegetable salad made with cooked vegetables is a must, just melt in your fork deliciousness.

There is no better conclusion for this lunch  that eating a homemade ice cream with blueberries of the Apennines.

After lunch we decided to continue on the “Abetone” an ancient road that connect through the Apennines Emilia to Tuscany . We arrived at Fiumalbo one of the most beautiful villages of Italy. Old stone houses, mostly renovated, overlook sloping narrow streets, in the typical medieval conformation of the villages of the Apennines.

On the way back we were delighted from the sight of the higher peak of the Tuscan –Emilian Apennine : Mount Cimone (that means big peak). It’s really a wonder to behold when the top is still snow covered and the valleys are completely green!

Our last stop was at Piane di Mocogno, a resort town famous for skiing in winter and long walking tours in summer . We had a relaxing walk surrounded by snow and sun .
